Incense use in China dates back to at least the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE). Trade along the early Silk Road introduced exotic aromatics such as sandalwood and frankincense from South and Central Asia. Incense became associated not only with ritual practice but also with court life and elite culture.
